Reggae Artiste Black Uhuru Biography by InfosysTV The most successful of the second-generation reggae bands, Black Uhuru maintained their high quality despite numerous personnel changes in their 40-plus-year history. The first reggae band to win a Grammy award, for their 1983 album Anthem, Black Uhuru was called "The most dynamic and progressive reggae act of the 1970s and early '80s." The band, whose name comes from the Swahili word meaning "freedom," was formed in the Waterhouse district of Kingston by Don Carlos, Rudolph "Garth" Dennis, and Derrick "Duckie" Simpson. When the group experienced difficulties securing a record contract, Spencer left to pursue a solo career and Dennis joined the Wailing Souls. Simpson, who remained the thread throughout Black Uhuru's evolution, reorganized the band with Errol "Jay" Wilson and quivery-voiced lead vocalist Michael Rose. Popcaan or Poppi who's birth name is Andre Jay Sutherland was born on July 15, 1988 in the Parish of St. Thomas, Jamaica.
As a youngster he attended the Happy Grove High School located in Hector's River, Portland Jamaica where he began to show signs of his love for and desire of wanting to become a dancehall artiste.
Even before joing the Vybz Kartel led Portmore Empire, he was associated with dancehall artiste such as Zebbi D, Gilberto and War Hammer.
In 2007 after performing at a party he was ask to join the Portmore Empire, He is currently (2011) working and being mentored for Vybz Kartel.

At an early age of 7, he used to preform during school talent shows and after school concerts. Knowing his talent he thought it was just a pipe dream for him to make it big like such artists such as Buju Banton and Sizzla.
As a child Popcaan had dreams of becoming a soldier for the Jamaican army and serve his country proud. He went as far as taking the test to become a foot soldier.
He soon came to realize that it wasn’t for him due to the lack of effort done by the team. He quit because he was the test was just to run and hope over stuff on the ground and was looking for more of a challenge.
He made his debut in 2008, With his smash single "My War". He gained international success in 2010 with the hit song "Clarks" which also featured his mentor Vybz Kartel. He is also famous for his songs "Dream",Raving on the Summertime riddim which has been a huge hit and "Gangsters City".
In 2011, he received Excellence in Music and Entertainment (EME) Awards for the 'Best New Artiste', and 'Collaboration of the Year' for "Clarks" with Vybz Kartel and Gaza Slim, the song also winning the award for "Dancehall Song of the Year'.
