Kartel gets appeal nod

Image
Entertainers Vybz Kartel and Shawn Storm Vybz Kartel and his three co-accused were granted leave to appeal their conviction and sentence in the Court of Appeal yesterday. Kartel, given name Adidja Palmer; Kahira Jones; Andre St John; and entertainer Shawn "Shawn Storm" Campbell hope to have their sentences for murder overturned. Thomas Tavares-Finson, attorney for Vybz Kartel, described the development as an "important step in the appeal process". In an interview with the Jamaica Observer, he added, "It’s the first but critical step in the appeal process. A single judge, Justice Frank Williams, has read all the papers from the trial and determined that there are grounds on which an appeal could be allowed, so he has given the green light to proceed. We will move on to a full appeal in September. It is a limited victory, but an important moral victory for my client, as it reinforces the notion in his mind that justice will be served and he will be acquitte

Vybz Kartel Returns To Instagram Gaza Fans Celebrates

Image
Vybz Kartel is back on Instagram following an hiatus. Back in January, the deejay went lights out on IG after authorities announced that they are investigating whether or not he has been recording music in prison. A rep for Kartel previously told DHH that he has no way of recording music in prison and cannot run his social media accounts because devices like cellphones are banned from inside the maximum security prison where he is housed. Despite that revelation, we didn’t hear anything from the Gaza boss on IG for five months, but that all changed last weekend when he uploaded two videos on his account giving fans a snippet of two of his new singles. Sources told us that Kartel social media accounts are run by his wife Shorty and his management team. Vybz Kartel and his attorneys are currently gearing up for their next big legal showdown in the Jamaica Appeal Court. The appeal trial is set for February 19 next year and is expected to run for three weeks. His attorney Tom Tavares-

When mum or dad is an alcoholic

Image
One in five children in the UK are said to be negatively affected by their parents' drinking, and the effects can last well into adulthood. Four women - Karen, Liz, Hilary and Lynne - spoke to Jo Morris about growing up with a parent dependent on alcohol. "Some people talk about what books they've read, or films they've been to see, but instead we talk about how drunk our parents were," says Karen. Karen and her friend Liz met at work in their late 20s and quickly bonded when they realised they had a shared history. "It's not the same talking to somebody who doesn't know what it's like," says Liz. Gallows humour helps to deal with the horrible memories. Like the time Liz's mum sold her toys to get money for alcohol. Or the time Karen's alcoholic dad went to the pub instead of collecting her from after-school club. "It's a bit like Top Trumps - alcoholic-parent Top Trumps," Karen laughs. They both remember dreading the wa

Yemeni fighters kill US troops

Yemeni tribal fighters have reportedly killed several American troops after they launched a heliborne attack on a village in Yemen’s central province of Ma’rib, a report says. According to a report by Yemen's Khabar news agency website, at least 30 troops from the US and some Persian Gulf states, were deployed in the rural area of Khathla in the early hours of Tuesday and engaged in a gun battle with fighters from two prominent tribes in the village. It added that during the ensuing fierce battle at least seven of the invading troops were fatally injured, who had come there with the purported mission of gunning down militants belonging to the Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) Takfiri terrorist group. The report, however, added that no militants of the terror group were in the area when three Apache choppers and two military transport aircraft of the US approached the village. Earlier in the day, Centcom, the US military command in the Middle East, however, told a totally d

Protesters block streets leading to a US base in Bahrain after raids on Diraz on May 23, 2017 Bahrain's Interior Ministry has announced the death of five people in raids on protesters gathering in the northwestern village of Dirza. On Tuesday, over 280 people were also detained during the attack, according to the ministry. Earlier in the day, Bahraini regime forces stormed into the residence of Sheikh Isa Qassim, the spiritual leader of the country’s Shia majority in the village, arresting everyone inside the house. It is not yet clear whether Sheikh Qassim himself is among the detainees. Security forces fired birdshots at protesters and teargas into the house of the prominent cleric. The village has been a scene of protests since last June, when authorities stripped the cleric of his citizenship over accusations that he used his position to serve foreign interests and promote “sectarianism” and “violence.” He has denied the allegations. Following the brutal operations, Bahraini c

Reggae Artiste DESIRE Biography

He frequently used to beat the desks as a drum and sing over popular dancehall tunes with his friends, while the teacher wasn’t there. It was fun for him and he had a knack for rhythm and flow. Encouragement came from his friends and especially his brother who said he can be the next Garnet Silk. He immediately started recording music every evening after school. He was adamant to get the work done, for he had a lot to say. He called himself “Ghetto Image”. His influences were Garnet Silk, Bob Marley and Junior Reid to name a few. Ghetto Image however began his career as a dancehall artiste, which lead him to his first couple of singles, ‘Square mouth Gents’ in 2001 and ‘Gyal a swarm me’ in 2002.
