I don't believe in true love

Image
I am a young woman 18 years of age. Time after time I have been told that I am beautiful, smart and intelligent. I am also a Christian who is persecuted because of how I dress. I like to wear pants and jewellery and my church doesn't believe in wearing such things. Nevertheless, I uphold the commandments of God and pray every day and seek to become a better person and Christian. The problem that I am having is that I am puzzled about the whole idea of true love, romance and happy endings. I have never had a boyfriend, never kissed anyone, so I know that physically I am immature but mentally I am not. I have read enough to have an understanding of life. I have always been focused on school, my dreams and aspirations, so I didn't have to indulge in such affairs. But despite all those factors, I have yet to meet or see a guy who grabs my attention. The older I get, I am wondering if such feelings do exist or if it is all a myth. I wonder if people still fall madly in love, where t

Kartel's transfer a 'win win'? Earnings from music could go toward victim's family, prison rehab programme

Image
Some people believe that Vybz Kartel may soon find that the fruits of his artistic talent will be used to bolster the prison system's rehabilitation programme, and perhaps be used to make restitution to the family of slain dancer Clive "Lizard" Williams. "Over at Tower Street, there is a studio, and better facilities that the deejay can use, and at least the system can monitor what he is putting out in terms of music. Kartel will earn no money from these songs and the money can go towards the rehab programme. The transfer is a win-win for Vybz Kartel, at Horizon Remand, he had to be using some devices that were not ideal, but at Tower Street, he would have a studio, and at Horizon, he was on lock down 23 hours out of the day, while at Tower Street, he can walk the prison yard," a reliable source told Loop News. The Tower Street prison, popularly known as GP, is fitted with a fully operational recording studio and a low frequency radio station FREE FM, which broa

Vybz Kartel releases a lot of 'crap' songs - Mr Lexx

Image
Dancehall artiste Mr Lexx is the latest deejay to receive backlash over comments on incarcerated superstar Vybz Kartel. In a radio interview on NewsTalk93FM's Nightly Fix, Mr Lexx said Kartel's popularity is primarily driven by the great team behind him and that a lot of the music the incarcerated deejay releases are "crap". "I wish I had (Kartel's) team... nuff ah the tune dem weh him put out ah crap, dem just hot for the first two weeks when dem come out and then you don't hear nothing about them," Mr Lexx said. After being warned by the show's host that he may face backlash similar to Double X, who was blasted last week after appearing to suggest that Kartel should not be recording in prison, Mr Lexx added: "No, mi ah 100 per cent Gaza, but I am just being real. Couple ah (Kartel's) tune ah crap ... but if you constantly hear a song over and over you may probably end up liking it." Despite the explanation, Mr Lexx's comm

Human Rights Watch: Trump’s proposals will harm millions

Image
Human Rights Watch (HRW) has called on US President-elect Donald Trump to repudiate controversial proposals he made during the election campaign, saying that, if implemented, they would harm millions of people in America and beyond. In a letter on Wednesday to Trump, Human Rights Watch Executive Director Kenneth Roth cited some of Trump’s controversial statements regarding torture, Guantanamo military prison, immigration, refugees, women’s rights, health care, and media freedom among others. The chief of the American-founded international non-governmental organization reminded Trump that he should fulfill obligations of the United States under international humanitarian law. “As president, you will have the heavy responsibility to prevent enactment of dangerous pledges and proposals that were made in the course of the campaign,” Roth wrote. “A first step will be to unequivocally retract such proposals, condemn hateful rhetoric and acts undertaken in your name, and commit to respe

A Peace Concert Is A Suggestion, Not A Solution

Bob Marley (centre) urges then Prime Minister Michael Manley (left) and then Opposition Leader Edward Seaga to shake hands at the One Love Peace Concert at the National Stadium on April 22, 1978. A few days ahead of the Entertainers Against Crime and Violence concert in Montego Bay on December 4 and the 40th anniversary celebration of the Smile Jamaica concert - both of them free events - I am reminded of a misconception about efforts at using music to combat mayhem. Twenty years ago, I took my first and only official tour of the Bob Marley Museum at 56 Hope Road, St Andrew (although, naturally, I have been back to the premises the numerous times for entertainment-related matters). It started in the courtyard with the guide explaining paintings on the wall, her back to Hope Road and us tourists facing her. One of the paintings was from the One Love Peace Concert of 1978, when Bob Marley united then Prime Minister Michael Manley and Opposition Leader Edward Seaga's hands above his h

PNP, JLP agree that use of force not best in tackling illegal garages

Image
PNP’s Venesha Phillips KINGSTON, Jamaica — Both the People’s National Party (PNP) and the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) agreed that using force to get rid of illegal garages, which are still too prevalent in the country, is not the best method. “We recognise that the practice of going in and beating them off the street, it hasn’t worked,” said the JLP’s Milton Brown during the Local Government Debates on Wednesday. “We have tried it over (a) long time, to try and force them off the street. “I think our business will be to convince them that that’s not the place to do business, on the street,” he said. The PNP’s Venesha Phillips welcomed Brown’s response to CVM TV’s Irvin Forbes’ question on the prevalence of illegal garages. “There are several implications for these garages, but one of the things we are mindful of, and we are happy that my colleague on the other side was able to point out that the brash approach does not necessarily always work, sometimes the massager approach is bett

Harambe for Rita

Image
Rita Marley ZIGGY Marley, eldest son of Bob and Rita Marley, said his mother is recuperating in Florida. He spoke exclusively with the Jamaica Observer last weekend. “If is one thing I know, my mother is a strong, strong woman. She is doing much, much better and is in Florida with (my sister) Cedella and other family members,” he said. A former member of the sibling group the Melody Makers, Cedella Marley is CEO of the family-owned Tuff Gong International. In September, there were reports that the 71-year-old Rita suffered another stroke and was admitted to a Miami hospital. Marley said the decision was taken not to allow his mother to return to Ghana, where she has resided for the past 20 years. “We just decided to keep her there [Miami] and give her a chance to get herself back together, and she’s doing much better right now,” he said. Born Alpharita Anderson in Cuba, Rita is the mother of three of Bob Marley’s 13 children — David (Ziggy), Cedella and Stephen. They we

f Moody’s upgrade should impact investment – Fayval Williams

Image
WILLIAMS... we inherited a mountain of domestic arrears FAYVAL Williams, minister of state in the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service, said yesterday that the two-notch upgrade to B3 by Moody’s Investors Service reflects the rating agency’s confidence in the Government’s continued fiscal discipline and the strong emphasis on economic growth and job creation. This week, Moody’s upgraded Jamaica’s Government issuer, senior unsecured and provisional shelf ratings to B3 from Caa2, and changed the Caribbean island’s outlook to stable from positive. Moody’s said its decision to upgrade Jamaica’s ratings was driven by “significant and sustained fiscal consolidation, and the Government’s strong commitment to continued reforms to reduce its high debt burden. “Having the [new] Stand-by Arrangement in place in such quick succession and in such a seamless manner significantly reduces the risk to the economy and helps to boost confidence among local and international investors. The change in

In my 60s and very horny

Image
Dear Pastor, When a person is feeling horny, reading the Bible and praying won't help. If you are hungry or thirsty, do you pray? I don't think so. If a woman feels horny, that's OK. I am in my early 60s. I am single and am as horny as a young ram. K. Dear K., I understand what you are saying, and you do have a good point. Whether a person is 20 or 50 or even 80, he/she has to learn to keep the body under control. Some people ignorantly believe that when one has got to a certain age, one's sexual feelings die. They are so wrong. The Bible says everyone; especially Christians should keep the body under subjection. There is where Bible reading and fasting help. Pastor

St Thomas has 'grave' problem ... cemeteries low on space

Image
Cemeteries low on space St Thomas residents have had to travel further east in the parish to bury their dead. The Red Hills and Yallahs cemeteries were forced to close and another opened in Leith Hall, east of Morant Bay. Secretary manager for the St Thomas Parish Council, Errol Greene, told THE STAR that some residents complain about the distance they have to travel to access the graveyards, but noted there are several community cemeteries. "But they (the residents) don't want to take them (their dead) to these local cemeteries close to them. They want to take them to 'big' cemeteries," he shared. One of the owners of Edna's Funeral Supplies and Services in Morant Bay, Sean Spalding, believes the space at the cemeteries in St Thomas are not being used wisely. "The cemeteries are in a poor state, man. They are filled with all different types of concrete structure, whether it be sepulchre, vault, tombs, or house graves. They are disorderly and old-fashione

This homosexual man claims the state shelter that has been his home for nearly two years is seeking to evict him because of his sexuality. Twenty-one-year old Oshane Brown* is a homosexual living with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), and he claims the state shelter which has been his home for nearly two years, is seeking to evict him because of his sexuality. "It's really the man that is in charge of the dormitories that want me out. Every minute, I have to be making complaints about the way I am being discriminated against and nothing comes from it. I don't want to live like this anymore," Brown said. "I'm trying to ask people if there is any vacancy around that could accommodate me. If a even fi clean up them yard and do work for them and stay there. I would really appreciate that," he added. The youngster said he is desperate as he has nowhere else to turn if he leaves the shelter. His parents abandoned him at a state home at three years old. H

Speculations that Vybz Kartel's recent transfer from the Horizon Adult Remand Centre to the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre (GP) was as a result of claims that the deejay has been recording songs while behind bars has caused some amount of unease among several entertainers and producers in the industry. Aside from expressing shock that the deejay was moved from one facility to another, many key industry players have refused to comment on the matter, stating that the issue was way too sensitive for them to give their opinion. THE WEEKEND STAR contacted Notnice, one of the producers with whom the incarcerated deejay has worked over the years, who although he was aware of the move, was unwilling to say anything. "Mi hear say him move, but mi can't give my opinion on something I don't know the facts or no details about," he said before going silent.
