Reggae Artiste Black Uhuru Biography by InfosysTV The most successful of the second-generation reggae bands, Black Uhuru maintained their high quality despite numerous personnel changes in their 40-plus-year history. The first reggae band to win a Grammy award, for their 1983 album Anthem, Black Uhuru was called "The most dynamic and progressive reggae act of the 1970s and early '80s." The band, whose name comes from the Swahili word meaning "freedom," was formed in the Waterhouse district of Kingston by Don Carlos, Rudolph "Garth" Dennis, and Derrick "Duckie" Simpson. When the group experienced difficulties securing a record contract, Spencer left to pursue a solo career and Dennis joined the Wailing Souls. The 15th staging of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Track and Field Invitational Meet, which will have an overseas flavour to it, will be contested today at the Usain Bolt Track at the Mona Campus, starting at midday with field events, followed by the opening ceremony at 2:00 pm. Jamaica’s top clubs and universities, such as Racers, MVP, UWI, Akan, Sprint Tech and Cameron Blazers, are set to go up against teams from Guyana, The Bahamas and Trinidad and Tobago in what is expected to be approximately four hours of intense competition. The meet is one of many that will give Jamaica’s athletes a chance to fine-tune their preparations ahead of the National Senior Championships in June, and by extension the Rio Olympic Games in August. Anti-apartheid veteran Kathrada calls for Zuma to resign A South African anti-apartheid veteran has called on President Jacob Zuma to resign following a scandal over improper spending at his private home. Ahmed Kathrada, who was jailed alongside Nelson Mandela, said that Mr Zuma's resignation would end a "crisis of confidence" in the government. Mr Zuma said on Friday he would repay the money but would remain in his post. He has faced widespread calls for his resignation from South Africa's opposition. South Africa's highest court ruled that Mr Zuma had failed to uphold the constitution by ignoring instructions to repay some of the $16m in state funds spent on renovations at his private residence. In a televised address on Friday, Mr Zuma made no reference to the calls for his resignation. Palmyra: 'Mass grave' in recaptured Syrian city The grave containing the bodies of men, women and children was uncovered on the north-eastern edge of the city.Syrian troops have found a mass grave containing about 40 bodies in the city of Palmyra following its recapture from the Islamic State (IS) group, state news agency Sana reports. Some had been beheaded while others had been shot, a military source told AFP. He said they were officers, soldiers, members of pro-regime militia and their relatives. Twenty-four of the victims were civilians, including three children, the source added. The bodies have been transferred to a military hospital in the provincial capital Homs. Some have reportedly been identified. Last Sunday, the Syrian army, backed by Russian forces, recaptured Palmyra and its world-famous complex of ancient ruins, which IS overran in May last year.
