New Year's Eve TERROR threat: London on high alert for attack

Austrian cops received the warning that jihadi sleeper cells are plotting imminent attacks on European capital cities.

Police Europe-wide are increasing security measures in a bid to prevent a Paris-style copycat attack.
The warning made specific mention of the threat to shoppers and revellers in “crowded spaces” and warned that the strike could take place between Christmas and New Year.
A statement released by police in Austria said: "In the days before Christmas a warning was sent out by a friendly (intelligence) service to numerous European capitals, saying that it could come to an attack involving explosives or a shooting between Christmas and the New Year in crowded spaces.
It added: "Several possible names of potential attackers were mentioned, which were checked, and the investigation based on (these checks) has so far yielded no concrete results.”

A spokesman for the Interior Ministry in neighbouring Germany said: "Germany is still in the crosshairs of Jihadist terrorism.”

The alert comes after news that four regional armed police units could be created in the UK to deal with terror attacks, according to the Telegraph.

It is feared that there is inadequate provision for dealing with possible attacks outside London.
Police units would be on standby around the clock in case an attack takes place.
There has reportedly been a doubling of the number of armed cops on London's streets at any one time following the Paris terror attacks.
Officers have performed public drills, and will advance towards terror gunmen even if they are being fired at in the event of a Paris-style attack in the UK.
Security expert Will Geddes has told Daily Star Online how to survive a terror attack.
