Reggae Artiste Black Uhuru Biography by InfosysTV The most successful of the second-generation reggae bands, Black Uhuru maintained their high quality despite numerous personnel changes in their 40-plus-year history. The first reggae band to win a Grammy award, for their 1983 album Anthem, Black Uhuru was called "The most dynamic and progressive reggae act of the 1970s and early '80s." The band, whose name comes from the Swahili word meaning "freedom," was formed in the Waterhouse district of Kingston by Don Carlos, Rudolph "Garth" Dennis, and Derrick "Duckie" Simpson. When the group experienced difficulties securing a record contract, Spencer left to pursue a solo career and Dennis joined the Wailing Souls. WHEN rap star Busta Rhymes introduced Junior Reid on stage during the Busta Rhymes And Friends show on December 5, he made no secret of his admiration for the veteran roots singer.
“This man has been my godfather since 2006, and he is still my godfather today!” the burly rapper declared.
The concert, which took place in Newark, New Jersey, had an all-star cast.
“It was a great feeling hearing that from Busta Rhymes; he’s a great rapper and a really great friend,” Reid said.


The event featured guest appearances from Lil Wayne, Puff Daddy, Mariah Carey, Lil’ Kim and Sean Paul. Reid has gained widespread acceptance in the hip hop community through hit collaborations with The Game, MIMS, and Alicia Keys.
“I am just glad I can continue to represent reggae on the biggest platforms out there,” said Reid, who continues to promote his latest album,
Junior Reid: The Living Legend.
It includes songs like
Same Boat and
Love You Back. His upcoming dates include SOB in New York on December 19, Antigua on December 21, and Montserrat on December 23.
