3 Cops freed of murder

Three members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force were recently freed of murder in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court.
Sergeant Melvin Ellington, Constable Haldore Dixon and District Constable Roan Johnson, all of the Riversdale Police Station, were freed in the St Catherine North division, when the matter came up in court.
the Crown conceded to an application by defence attorneys that the matter should be dismissed. The men were later told a no-order was granted and they were free to go.
The charge arose from a February 15, 2010 incident in Riversdale. It was alleged that a police party from the station responded to a report of breaches of the Firearm Act.
The party was said to have engaged men in a shoot-out during which Claudius 'Taliban' Taylor, 30, was shot and killed. An illegal handgun was reportedly seized during the incident.
People, however, claimed Taylor was killed in cold blood. An investigation was launched and a file sent to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, which ruled that the three policemen be charged with murder.
They made numerous court appearances and maintained their innocence throughout. They were represented by attorneys-at-law Sean Kinghorn, Carolyn Reid and Christopher Townsend.
